Commissioned for concerts at the Kitchen and the
Alternative Museum, "The Apotheosis of John Brown" is
excerpted from The Autobiography of Frederick Douglass.
The piece, written so that it can be performed by
virtuosos but also by amateur orchestras with sufficient
rehearsal, tells the story of the abolitionist John
Brown from Douglass's perspective. Scored for narrator,
violin soloist, soprano, mezzosoprano, tenor and
baritone with baroque orchestra (solo violin, first and
second violins, violas, cello, bass, harpsichord,
percussion with snare, bass drum, castanets), the
recording features Robbie McCauley as narrator,
violinist Laura Seaton, singers Mary Lee Kortes, Napua
Davoy, Jason White, Gilbert High, and an orchestra
conducted by Richard Auldon Clark with Gwendolyn Toth on
the harpsichord, 40 minutes.
